"Before you diagnose yourself with depression or low self-esteem, first make sure that you are not, in fact, just surrounded by assholes." - William Gibson
After my initial post I received a few emails from people telling me how much they can relate to my blog and told me they are fortunately to be surrounded by people that support them. Some also share their struggle with me and how they overcame them. One of the girl told me about her struggle when her coach told her to lose weight when she was in intermediate school (because her coach wanted her super thin *_*)... thanks coach *rolling eye*. This just reminded me of an incident in Hong Kong few years back where someone I didn't know tell me to lose weight. I was on a hike (with 2 marathons under my belt) with a group of people and a marathoner made the following comment. He told me that I should stop running because I am too slow and too heavy. (My marathon time was 6 1/2 hr and 6 hr). Sorry skinny middle age guy in Hong Kong, I ran more than a few marathon and I stop counting them anymore. Good thing I didn't listen to him but listened to my awesome coaches instead.
I just think that I am fortunate enough to be surrounded by positive people that supported me (and I actually receive and acknowledge their care =)...). My family, friends, teammates, coaches, and coworkers help me to get where I am today. Without them, I wouldn't camp on snow, climb Mt Shasta, run marathons, do 4 Ironman in 13 months. I wouldn't completed my first ultra marathon, I wouldn't sign up for a 100km run, and I wouldn't sign up for a 100 miles race. Yes, I signed up for a 100 miles race. I'll tell you guys more about it when it gets closer.
So I know a similar approach need to be taken with this get fit journey. I don't think I have any 'not supportive' people in my life right now because I learned to distance myself from all of them, but I remember there was a time when I was surrounded with people who criticize me for everything that I do. They made fun of me, they said I can't be successful. They were a bunch of bully because they cannot deal with their problems on their own and they are insecure. Or maybe they just have too much ego?? You'll be surprised how many grown up still act this way because they think this can help them remain on the spotlight. Little did they known, they are long expired because their core is already rotten.
"Keep people around you that uplift you and encourage you. Anyone else is toxic to your growth"
While a few people may get in our way to grow, we need to remind ourselves that there are many who support us in whatever we do. Many had supported me in the past so I try to do the same. You should too. Talent has limit, effort doesn't. Do everything wholeheartedly even if you may not reach your goal. Sometime we do something because we just want to send the point across.
I am ending this blog with a song called Face Down (Thanks Nina!). I find the lyrics extremely powerful and straight forward (sometime easy that I can understand lol)
"Do you feel like a man when you push her around?
Do you feel better now as she falls to the ground?"
One should help others to get up, not pushing people around until they fall to the ground (especially if you claim he/she is someone that you love). Thanks jerks!
The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus - Face Down
Hey girl, you know you drive me crazy
one look puts the rhythm in my hand.
Still I'll never understand why you hang around
I see what's going down.
Cover up with make up in the mirror
tell yourself, it's never gonna happen again
you cry alone and then he swears he loves you.
Do you feel like a man when you push her around?
Do you feel better now as she falls to the ground?
Well I'll tell you my friend, one day this world's going to end
as your lies crumble down, a new life she has found.
A pebble in the water makes a ripple effect
every action in this world will bear a consequence
If you wade around forever you will surely drown
I see what's going down.
I see the way you go and say you're right again,
say you're right again
heed my lecture
Do you feel like a man when you push her around?
Do you feel better now as she falls to the ground?
Well I'll tell you my friend, one day this world's going to end
as your lies crumble down, a new life she has found.
Face down in the dirt, she said,
this doesn't hurt, she said,
I finally had enough.
[x2]
One day she will tell you that she has had enough
he's coming round again.
Do you feel like a man when you push her around?
Do you feel better now as she falls to the ground?
Well I'll tell you my friend, one day this world's going to end
as your lies crumble down, a new life she has found.
